Opportunity: Volunteer to work with artists

Volunteer for Francisco's Farm Arts Festival in historic Midway! This is a juried art festival which takes place at Midway College and attracts over 5,000 visitors. We are in need of volunteers from May 17-18, 2014 (as well as the days leading up to the festival). Art students will particularly benefit from volunteering since they will be working one on one with prestigious artists with unique backgrounds. Of course, professors are also welcome to volunteer. Three Opportunities: Volunteer fair in Frankfort & position in Frankfort & sculpture call

The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) will host an informational fair Jan. 16 for people who want to know more about KHS volunteer opportunities. The event will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History at 100 W. Broadway in Frankfort.

Current volunteers and KHS staff will be on hand to answer questions about the volunteer experience and current needs. Opportunities exist in a wide range of areas, from data entry and collection processing to leading tours and working with schoolchildren. Anyone age 14 and older can apply to volunteer.

The event is a prelude to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 20. More information is available at history.ky.gov/volunteer

Summer Workshops

If you have never considered it, you might look into the possibility of attending a summer workshop in art. There are two that often come to mind for my: Maine Media Workshops (Maine) and Sante Fe Photographic Workshops (New Mexico). Both have a strong emphasis in photography. I had the good fortune of attending a workshop at Maine a number of summers ago. It was educational, fun, beautiful and a great chance to meet and network with others, not to mention the lobster dinner at the end of the week.

Another reason to consider these opportunities is that they often employ college students to work as assistants or volunteers throughout the summer. This would give you a great chance to learn and work alongside well-known artists.

In addition, you might consider a place like Anderson Ranch (Colorado). They offer study in much more than photography, including ceramics, woodworking, painting, printmaking, children's programs, and more.

Volunteer sign ups underway for Kentucky Crafted: The Market 2013

Volunteers are needed for Kentucky Crafted: The Market 2013. The Kentucky Arts Council's fine art and craft marketplace featuring the work of more than 200 Kentucky artists attracted 10,000 visitors last year to downtown Lexington. The 2013 Market is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever.

The Market will be March 1–3, 2013, at the Lexington Convention Center, 430 W. Vine St.

It takes many hands to produce a large-scale, successful event of this kind. Volunteers are needed from Thursday, Feb. 28, through Sunday, March 3, to work shifts of three hours minimum. (See available times for specific days on the registration page.)

Description: "The day will be set up where artists hold mini-workshops for classes that rotate from one "station" to another. Each session or class is for about 45 minutes. We are looking to focusing on art in every way possible. The date again is set for March 15th starting from around 8:00 am to about 1:00 pm. With breaks for lunch!"

Volunteer: Spring

Kentucky Crafted: The Market is celebrating its 30^th anniversary and is moving in 2012 to Lexington where it all started! The Kentucky Arts Council needs your help! It takes many hands to put on such a large event. This year’s Market will be March 1 – 4 at the Lexington Convention Center in Lexington, Ky. We have openings for Wednesday – Sunday and a range of specific hours from which you may choose. We are asking for volunteers to work a minimum 3-hour shift. Experience!

One of the chief comments that I receive from recent alums is that they wished they had more "real-world" experience before they were out in the field seeking employment. In fact, that's what employers also seek! EXPERIENCE! To gain such field work, consider volunteering time at a local gallery or exhibition space. ArtTigers is a fantastic example of one such opportunity on our own campus. If you're interested in participating in this "student guide" program, please see art gal (aka Laura, our Gallery Director and Curator of Collections).

In addition to our galleries on campus, Scott County has a local museum, several arts spaces, and other cultural organizations that seek volunteers. Further afield, the International Museum of the Horse is particularly seeking volunteers to work in the galleries for their new exhibition "The Horse." Where are you interested in seeking experience? I bet there's an opp (as in "opportunity") for that!

In case you need convincing, consider that volunteers can connect people with art and objects in many ways: they provide one-to-one contact with visitors to galleries and they also engage with viewers, monitor the areas, and often provide important information (either informally or through an "official" tour capacity).

Please consider helping out your community by volunteering. Many times, if this project has a lasting commitment and involves an educative component, you may be able to seek academic credit for this internship/volunteer experience. Questions? Contact Dr. Decker

Opportunity #2: Photography fans, come to the U of L for a day of lectures and discussions on the nature of photography as history and document. Brought to you by the U of L's Center for arts and culture partnerships (the same hub that coordinated last spring's public art and the city...yay) This program asks: "What are the relationships between photography, history and documentation?" The conference brings together authors, photographers, curators and scholars to explore these connections and more at an October 14th University of Louisville conference. The event is in conjunction with the Louisville Photo Biennial. Speakers include Shelby Lee Adams, longtime photographer of Appalachia; Pulitzer Prizewinning photojournalist Lucian Perkins; Matt Wrbican, Andy Warhol Museum archivist; Tom Rankin, director of Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies; and Molly Bingham, photographer and filmmaker noted for her work in Iraq, Rwanda and Eastern Congo." October 2- 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. I am doing a community arts activity - “A Drive-Thru Art Show” at the Spot Light Festival (Triangle Park). I need volunteers to help supervise as the kids paint on banners that will eventually be hung downtown. I also need help getting the participants to answer a question about art, document their answer and take their picture. October 16- 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Museum Go Round. I will be offering a free children’s activity at museum go round (downtown). Volunteers will assist children in making a craft.October 22, 28 and 29- Isaac Murphy- Everybody reads project 10 a.m. – 1ish. I am working with 3^rd, 4^th and 5^th graders from Booker T. Washington. The children will be coming out to the Museum for visual and literary arts activities. I need a few volunteers to assist myself and another leader in conducting the activities. October 30- Fall Festival- 1 p.m. - 4.pm. We are having a fall festival on the Museum ground that is free to the public. Activities include a Trunk-or-Treat, face painting, pumpkin bedazzling, bean bag toss, costume contests and much more. We would love any volunteers to help with set up, helping run a particular activity during the festival and break down. If you are available for all or any of the time let me know. November 6, 13 & 20- Jewelry Workshops- 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. I will be teaching jewelry workshops to 15 and older (usually adults) If you consider yourself any bit crafty then this is for you! I will teach you the projects (they are simple, I promise) and then you will teach a group of about 6 on the day of the workshop.- you get to take home your projects from the practice day and the day of the workshop- about $40 of jewelry!
