Making a Six Month Pinhole Exposure

Via the Phoblographer, recommended by Wes Folsom

Matt Bigwood hails from the UK and has been a photographer since 1986, and recently showed us a photo from a long term project that he worked on. The photo above is a six month long exposure using a beer can converted into a pinhole camera. Pinhole photography is amongst the earliest forms of the craft, and it is practiced by many still even today. We’ve reviewed pinhole adapters for mirrorless cameras before and we’ve even taken part of World Pinhole Day: a once a year festival that celebrates all things pinhole.

Thirft store art is fun to look at usually because it's terrible. These artists have made it awesome.

An interesting article in The Telegraph about how performance art should be sold.

The Artworks of Pete Fecteau

I don't know about anyone else but when I attempt a Rubik's Cube I usually try to twist that thing around for about 37 seconds and then just take the stickers off and stick them all back on so it looks like I solved it. Don't judge me. Pete Fecteau takes it to a whole new level. He can probably solve a Rubik's Cube the right way.

You can check out his website here.

MoMA's Getting Tech

Apparently if you're super hip and have one of those new-fangled iFancy devices you can download the MoMA app! Here's the description via iTunes:

"Description
Home to the world's finest collection of modern and contemporary art, The Museum of Modern Art is a place that fuels creativity, ignites minds, and provides inspiration. Now you and your kids can explore how artists use line, shape, and color, and create your own artwork inspired by MoMA's collection. Artists featured in the MoMA Art Lab app include Henri Matisse, Elizabeth Murray, Jean (Hans) Arp, and others.

Get creative and use the MoMA Art Lab app to create a sound composition, a shape poem, a group drawing, and more, then save and share your artwork (parental setting available). Digital play is a great way for families to learn about art, discover artists' processes and inspirations, and spend time together. "
It's $2.99 and I have no idea if it's worth it. I don't have one of those fancy phones/pod/tablet-y things or else I'd check it out and write a review. It seems pretty cool though!

Recreating Rothko's work in Lexington!

The Actors Guild of Lexington is performing a play about Mark Rothko!

"Master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New York’s famed Four Seasons Restaurant. In the two fascinating years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his young assistant, Ken, in his studio on the Bowery. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing. Raw and provocative, RED is a searing portrait of an artist's ambition and vulnerability as he tries to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting. Winner of the 2010 Tony Award." (via )

Check out this article in the Herald Leader about recreating all the artwork. Definitely not as easy as one might think.

The faux Mark Rothko paintings used during the production of Red are the work of Lexington artist DeAnna Rigney. Photo by Briana Scroggins (picture and caption thanks to the Herald Leader)

Rothko is probably my very favorite painter. When I studied abroad with Dr. Decker I got to see some of his work in person and it. was. incredible. Dr. Decker was pretty awesome too. Who are some of your favorite painters?!

GC Alum: Jeremy Reiss

Via the email  I got about good things happening at GC:

"Jeremy Reiss, Class of 1998. As maybe you saw in our recent Facebook and Twitter postings, Jeremy’s design of a baseball poster (filled with slang about hitting) was featured recently on NBC Sports. Here is Jeremy’s website to see that poster and other examples of his terrific work."

Tabaimo

Seniors are settling into plans for the Senior show, which opens MARCH 22!! When talking with one student today, I was thinking of the work of Japanese video artist Tabaimo (1975--). Her piece "Dolehouse" is below (also available on Art21

Her drawings and video installations deal with isolation, contagion, and instability in her society - contemporary Japan - and, it seems, too, in others. She draws upon Japanese art forms such as ukiyoe woodcuts, manga, and anime. The settings are often communal - places where folks gather. Even if the subject or medium of her work is not of your interest, consider her process. She notes that she approaches work “as though I spread a piece of paper in front of me and began throwing things on it.” Isn't this how many of work in our mediums -- be they words, graphite, ink, toner, paint, yarn? I encourage all of the seniors to view the work of other contemporary artists on the Art 21 site. And, of course, come by and talk with the faculty! (Juniors, it's never too early to start thinking about senior show!)

Volunteers are needed for Kentucky Crafted: The Market 2013. The Kentucky Arts Council's fine art and craft marketplace featuring the work of more than 200 Kentucky artists attracted 10,000 visitors last year to downtown Lexington. The 2013 Market is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever.

Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Check out the Jonathan LeVine Gallery! They have a pretty nice website (Darryl, what's your opinion?). I like it because it's nice and clean: not too busy, lots of negative space and simple fonts. Of the two current exhibitions, I think I like the Aakash Nihlani's "Portal". It reminds me of tan grams and I'm really attracted to the geometry in all of the pieces. The super neon colors don't hurt either.

The other exhibition, Haroshi's "Virtual Reality" is pretty cool too though. I really like all the colors. I also can't believe that a lot of those sculptures used to be skateboards. It all looks so smooth. Wow.

Color games are fun!

Check out this awesome color matching game that takes you through tests like matching hue, saturation, complementary colors and more. In the center a time with a specific shade (or shades) will appear and you move your mouse to match the exact color. It's not as easy as it sounds. I was terrible once you had to focus on more than one color at a time.

Also, beware this game is a serious time waster. I've spent about 15 minutes playing it already...

Check this artist out: Jason Gowans

"Representing a three-dimensional structure on a two-dimensional platform can make a figure fall flat. Vancouver-based photography technician Jason Gowans found this same principle to be true of vast landscapes trying to be captured within photographs. The essence and expansive beauty of the earth is lost on a medium without physical depth."

I found this guy on this Tumblr but you can visit his website here.

Slow Art Day - April 27, 2013

What a cool way to appreciate art! Go visit the Jacobs Gallery or the Wilson Gallery and get your art on!

"One day each year – April 27 in 2013 – people all over the world visit local museums and galleries to look at art slowly. Participants look at five works of art for 10 minutes each and then meet together over lunch to talk about their experience. That’s it. Simple by design, the goal is to focus on the art and the art of seeing."

You can follow the Tumblr here.
