Opportunity: Call for (Berlin) Art -- deadline March 22

Seeing Berlin: Meditations on Experience and (Re)presentation

Call for Artists:
Berlin is an exciting world capital and has long been considered an inspiration for working artists. For many, Berlin is the place connected with the memory of the end of the Cold War. Since that time, the city has contemplated its own image as perhaps no other city has, as it was reborn and rebuilt as the capital of unified Germany.

Student, emerging, and established artists are invited to submit work that is inspired by reflections on Berlin since 1989. Works may be in response to a visit to Berlin or in response to literary, media or historical presentations of the city. The exhibition will offer visitors an opportunity to consider the impact place has on the formation of memories as well as an understanding of the present.

Works of any medium are welcome, including, but not limited to, photography, drawing, painting and sculpture. Works will be displayed from April 17th, 2013 to May 15th, 2013 in the Max Kade German Cultural Center at the University of Cincinnati. The gallery will be open weekdays from 9 to 3:30. The exhibition will be free and open to the public.

All artwork submitted must be the original work of the artist. There is no submission fee. Artists will receive full credit for their work in any publications arising from the exhibition. The Department of German Studies will make every reasonable effort to safeguard artworks in the Kade Center. However artists must understand that they participate at their own risk. (Artists are responsible for insuring their work for the time of exhibition if they desire.)

Artists should send applications via email to Emily Wyatt at wyatte@mail.uc.edu by March 22, 2013. Applications should include a short artist’s bio, an image of the work in JPEG format, a description of how the work relates to the exhibition theme, and a description of the artwork’s size and display needs.

Artists are responsible for the drop-off and pick-up of their work.

*1-2 preparator positions are available. This would be an unpaid position and would involve a time commitment of 4-12 hours. Interested applicants should send a resume and brief cover letter.

The Second International Furoshiki Design Contest for Students Design a Furoshiki (Wrapping Cloth) !

This contest information was passed on to us by Dr. Rich in the Japanese Dept.

Furoshiki, or wrapping cloths, are stylish and distinctive everyday

items emblematic of the Japanese tradition of wrapping things. Since they are

reusable and therefore do not impose a burden on the environment, furoshiki

have attracted renewed interest in recent years, both in Japan and elsewhere.

In 2009 the Japan Foundation held an Original Furoshiki Design

Contest, soliciting submissions from students of design in 10 countries. A total

of 373 entries were submitted, and three were selected to receive top prizes.

Furoshiki displaying the top prize designs are now on sale at museum gift

shops and other venues in Japan. Full information is also available on the following website:

The Japan Foundation, New York: http://www.jfny.org/

If you have any inquires, please send an email to: Furoshikicontest@jfny.org
