Opportunity: Studio Assistant, part-time



Post-graduate Studio Assistant in Art* Transylvania University: The Art Program invites applications for the 2012-13 studio assistant position. 


 Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in studio art or equivalent experience in studio management and must intend to develop a career in the visual arts.  The assistant must plan to work with all art faculty members in the program’s studio areas with special emphasis in ceramics.  The position will provide pre-professional training in materials and processes as well as in studio management.  Duties will include, but will not be limited to:

1.     Preparation, organization and maintenance in ceramic, sculpture, printmaking, and painting studios
2.     Maintenance of the Art Building shop facilities and material storage
3.     Supervision and training of work-study students
4.     Order, receive, and (frequently) pick up materials and supplies for the studio art program
5.     Loading, unloading, and regularly firing kilns in the ceramic studio
6.     Assisting faculty in general and specific ways
7.     (Occasional) heavy lifting
8.     Maintaining an open studio
9.     Developing new work and exhibiting in the Shearer Student Art Gallery in the Spring

The Studio Assistant will receive $5,000 over the course of the 9-month academic year, and will have a private studio space.  Additionally, regular general use classroom-specific materials and tools will be available to the assistant.  Although the schedule can be flexible, assistants should expect to work about ten hours weekly, primarily between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., so as to work directly with studio faculty and to provide opportunity for faculty supervision.
